'Sheddin' The Blues - It's All Go For Green Thumbs
It’s hard to miss the huge smiles on the faces of Girgarre’s Friends of Gargarro volunteers at the moment. The joy, and the sense of excitement in the air is almost palpable. They’re watching, with justifiable pride, as the first of the buildings (pictured) destined to be Girgarre’s new Green Thumbs Nursery takes shape over on the Winter Road site.
“We’ve waited years for this to happen.” Green Thumbs Co-ordinator, Loraine Warde said recently. “This is the day. The footings went down on Thursday 17th December and the shed is going up at a cracking pace. The hard yards the volunteers have put in to get this off the ground has paid off. It’s just wonderful to see action at last”.
The move from the current overcrowded site on Olympic Street is now well and truly on the books for the 2021. “There’s still a great deal to do” Loraine said “Concreting the shed floor and fencing the site is next on the agenda. The installation of the shade houses and propagating igloos will get underway in the new year. They all need to be in place before we can move”.
In the meantime, the green fingered volunteers have not been idle while waiting for the action to begin. Building up plant stocks in anticipation of increased demand once the new nursery is functioning is keeping them busy. “We have a lot of fun propagating the plants,” Loraine said. “It’s only light work, one morning a week and we provide a light lunch afterwards. It’s been terrific to see new people popping up this year, willing to buck in and help us as public interest and momentum increases. We’re all looking forward to working from our new site in the very near future,” she said.
Green Thumbs is a successful Girgarre Community enterprise raising funds for the community car and the Friends of Gargarro Gardens project. The ‘Friends’ are the many volunteers who run the sales stall at the Farmers and Craft market, and attend regular working bees at the gardens.
